ANAESTHESIA IN EPILEPTIC DOGS
At some point during your dog’s life, they may require a general anaesthetic. Your vet can tailor your pet’s anaesthetic so that it is suitable for them depending on the cause of their seizures and the medication they are receiving.
There are some things that you can do to help your pet if they do require an anaesthetic.
Before Anaesthesia
In the days leading up to the anaesthetic, follow your pet’s normal routine as much as possible. They will usually require a period of fasting prior to the anaesthetic, but it is important that they still receive their epilepsy medication. If you have any questions or concerns about this, then speak with your veterinary surgeon. It is useful to take your pet’s epilepsy medications to the vets with you and write down the time you last gave their dose and when it is next due. This means that if your pet needs to stay in for a while, they have all the medication they need.
After anaesthesia
After general anaesthesia, try to resume your usual routine and treatment as before, or as instructed by your vet. Continue with all your pet’s epilepsy medication and check when the next dose is due.
